There appears to be an increase in the use of smokeable psychoactive drugs among young people today. Marijuana is by far the most common, however synthetic marijuana, and Salvia divinorum are also smoked and used to varying degrees. This course will identify some of the drugs young people are smoking, analyze the prevalence estimates within various populations and evaluate the current state of research on the harms of each drug. Discussions about prevention efforts and strategies will follow from the data available. This course has been approved for 3 CHES Category I continuing education contact hours (CECH) by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC).
We will look at the many facets of the growing problem of prescription drug abuse on college campuses. From feigning symptoms to cross-fading, the risks posed by prescription drugs used improperly are high. Student deaths, injuries, academic failure and progression to drugs such as horoine are documented outcomes of what some are calling an epidemic. Yet, there is little agreement on how to measure it, and even less on how to manage it. Through this course, Dr. Lange will raise the issues, and offer guideposts for how a campus may respond to this incredible prevention challenge.
